She lifts the plant out of its black plastic casing

and holds it in the palm of her hand.

Her long fingers curl around dark earth

taking care not to damage the white roots.

She places the plant in a new pot

holding it in place with one hand

whilst the other dives into the peat bag

and brings out handfuls of moist soil

smelling like fresh baked bread.

She sprinkles the brown crumbling earth

around the roots and gently presses it down.

Her big hands hold the edge of the ceramic pot

fingers spread wide.

She has dark hairs on her forearms and her muscles ripple

beneath white skin.

A silver bangle shines in the sun.

I think about what those hands will do for me.

Now I’m going to tell you the story
And it’s not Jackanory
Of a Yorkshire WOMAN’S enlightenment.

When I was at school
As a general rule
I had no time for those ugly spotted youths.
I was always surprised
And it opened my eyes
When Julie had broken up with John.

There she would be
In snuffling agony
And the object of this misery
Would be sitting there
With his spots and greasy hair
And I’d look at him and think – Yuk!

So I turned seventeen
And my mother would lean
Over and say to me
What’s the matter with you?
Just look at Andrew
You play tennis with him
All the time.
Now he’s a nice boy
Don’t you think so?
I said no
She said Oh
I just frowned.

So on Saturday nights
I’d pull on me tights
And go up the Drovers for dancin’.
They all seemed so square
With their handbags and hair

The boys didn’t dance
They just stood in a trance
Filling themselves with pints of bitter.
In the powder room
Much to my gloom
There was make-up

So a friend of me brother
Not vetted by mother

I knew exactly what he wanted
And my curiosity was taunted

And then the cricket hut loomed.

As we went in I thought

I was just getting in the swing

Well he looked quite peeved
But I wasn’t about to ease
His ego with words of assurance.
I just felt sick

With lack of endurance.

Well I tried different ones
And in different ways
But it still didn’t get
Any better.
I just felt numb
And got cramp in me bum.
Was it good?
I said no!
He said oh heck!

So down to London I came
With art on the brain
And my thoughts were taken up with college.
I tried one or two
At parties as yer do
But southerners weren’t any solace.

I thought fuck ‘em all
They make my skin crawl
But you see I still hadn’t twigged
Maybe you’re gay?
A friend said one day
I said do you think?
She said yes!

So for my thesis I chose women’s issues
And headed off to a women’s centre.
A woman opened the door and her eyes said cor!
As she said hello I thought yes!

So though I was green
I went out on the scene
What I saw there made my jaw drop.
I thought it would be
All gentle you see
But I soon changed my ideas on that!

I thought it was great
And I’d go out at eight
And drank and bopped till I dropped.
But I still hadn’t tried
I’m with her I lied
Are you dancing?
No sorry I’m whacked!

And so I progressed in my
See-through string vest
To smooching away to slow numbers
And then one night
A woman said right you’re coming home with me.
I said OK.

Back at her flat
We drank coffee and sat
For a while;
Her two friends were together.
In the end they said
Will you two go to bed?
We want to make love to each other.

In her friend’s room the earth was moving
I’d never heard such a noise of enjoyment.
So I laid on the bed and my woman said
I’ll just get out the other mattress!

So through the shrieks
And the squeaks
I settled down to sleep
Feeling a bit disappointed.
Then by the bed
Up popped a head.
Move over she said
So I did.

I can’t explain to you
The delicious taboo
It just felt so right and so natural.
In the morning light
There was no respite
And I walked down the road
Feeling great.

One day back at home
My mother did moan
Oh why can’t you find a nice man?
I was fed up with that
I won’t I spat
Why not?
‘Cause I sleep with women!

It’s disgusting she said
As she sobbed on her bed
Where did I go so wrong?
It’s because you went south
Came out of her mouth
And I always thought you were so strong!

I told me brother as well as me mother
He said, nay, what d’yer want to do that for?
My sister just said
What do you do in bed?
And my friends said I thought you were years ago!

So it just goes to show
You don’t always know
Where your sexual preferences lie.
It’s not always better
To go by the letter
If someone says hello
Have a try!

I was racking my brains as to what I should write about and I decided that I should write about my experiences since I started Liberty Bodies last year.

What a roller coaster ride it has been!

Having a stall is a strange experience; it’s like having a little square viewing screen opening onto all the fun and merriment going on at the other side of the table. The other strange phenomenon is that some people make comments about the merchandise as if we’re not there and so you do get the full on feedback experience, which can sometimes be very frank, and also very funny.

I love the buzz that I get from selling direct to the public; there is something hugely uplifting about designing a product, getting it produced, designing the packaging to be as eco friendly as possible and somebody then actually pays for it!

The other topic that took me completely by surprise is the fact that a lot of people said that they couldn’t buy the mugs because their mother doesn’t know they are gay and so they would have to de-gay the house when she came round. This was from both men and women. The funniest conversation I had was with two strapping Scottish guys who lived together and one of them said that his mother would go mad if she saw the men mugs in the house and so decided not to buy them. 4 hours later they returned, fairly merry, and in a fit of bravery, bought 2 men mugs.

I congratulated them on their decision to face the WRATH of MOTHER and they said ”Oh no, we’ve decided to leave them wrapped up under the stairs and wait ‘til she leaves!”

Of course my mother nearly fainted when she saw what I was selling and her comment was predictably “They’re disgusting!”

It didn’t come as a complete surprise I have to say, as I know she struggles with having a LESBIAN in the family but has accepted my partner finally, though still introduces her to people as my “friend.”

My one word of caution: don’t come out to your mother whilst she is driving, like I did – not a good idea!

I was approached by LifeSliceFilms about 6 months ago by email asking if I would like to sponsor their film in return for some promotion on their website.

I answered yes because I have been given a lot of help myself in the past and I believe that what goes around comes around….plus what a marvellous thing – 2 women making a film!

It all went ahead - I was paying in monthly installments, not having a huge cash flow at the time.

Suddenly one day I had a eureka moment in the shower ( not THAT sort!!) and realised that they should have some merchandise to go with everything and what do I do? MERCHANDISE!!!

So….I emailed them – they were excited about the idea and voila! Out at Lunch Bags and Mugs!

All the profits from the items are going towards helping the film get out to the audience it deserves so…..if you feel like helping out independent filmmaking – please go to my Liberty Bodies
